ML Wasiela’s work leads you on a exciting journey where line, paint and color are your main guides.
She uses themes like myths and nature and the human form as a starting point, building up images by lifedrawing and imagination. Her background as a painter is still a visible influence, giving the work spherical look, with lots of air and openness in which the viewer sees the blank paper shining through.
Shown here are two recent series of prints; the Myth series, and the botanical series. The botanical series explores lifedrawing and nature, these lithographs where made in the botanical gardens of the University Utrecht and although they just have one layer, they give a lot of depth.
Another is a silkscreen based on printed lithograph where she strived for a light, watercolor effect with a strong ‘ lithograph’ feeling with soft pencil lines for instance, combined with ‘ painting’ through silkscreen.
The Myth series leans in the drawing, using the figures of lifedrawing to create mythical figures, shown in an almost velvety drawing style in demure grey or a gradient of blue hues.
Wasiela graduated from the Royal Acadamy of Fine Art in Antwerp with an MA in 2009.
She exhibited in several of independent shows and larger mixed exhibitions and recently got awarded grants to explore experimental printmaking techniques.
